The Hope College Alumni Association Board of Directors has appointed two new members.

The board’s new members are Dr. Kristina Kyles-Smith, a 2004 Hope graduate from Perry Hall, Maryland; and Helbert Valerio Carneiro, a rising junior from Santana do Acaraú, Brazil, as junior-class representative.

Liam Naumann of Wyckoff, New Jersey, who was formerly senior-class representative, was appointed representative of the most recent graduating class.  Maya Favors, a rising senior from Indianapolis, Indiana, who was formerly junior-class representative, was appointed senior-class representative.

The board’s three officers are continuing to serve in the same roles.  President is Jonathan Hatfield, a 2009 graduate from Grand Rapids; vice president is Michael Magan, a 1988 graduate from London, England; secretary is Gaye van den Hombergh, a 1981 graduate from Lincolnshire, Illinois.

The board members who have completed their service are: Alyson Davis, a 2024 graduate from Palatine, Illinois; and Anna Hartge, a 2012 graduate from Washington, D.C. 

Dr. Kristina Kyles-SmithKyles-Smith is the chief executive officer of Girls’ Charter School Inc., which operates Lillie May Carroll Jackson Charter School in Baltimore, Maryland, a pioneering, all-girls public middle school focused on project-based learning and equity in education.  With more than two decades of experience in school leadership, she has served as a state assistant superintendent, high school principal and nonprofit board chair.  She graduated from Hope with a social-studies composite major through the college’s teacher-education program; holds a Master of Arts degree in education leadership from Simmons College, and a Doctor of Education degree in curriculum and instruction from Cambridge University; and is pursuing a doctorate in public policy, with research focused on education leadership and governance.  She also mentors emerging leaders and champions initiatives that bridge education, policy and justice.  The Hope College Alumni Association presented her with a Young Alumni Award in 2008, and in 2021 she received a Kujichagulia Alumni award (named for the second principle of Kwanzaa, meaning self-determination) from the college’s Black Student Union.

Helbert Valerio CarneiroValerio Carneiro is majoring in political science and economics.  His activities at Hope have included the Spanish Bible Study, Global Ministries, the Community Prayer Team, the IMAGES: A Reflection of Cultures international showcase and the International Food Fair.  During the past school year, he was also a resident assistant in Voorhees Hall.  In his free time, he enjoys studying new languages, musical instruments and exploring the outdoors.
