Dr. Scott VanderStoep
Professor of Psychology
Dr. Scott VanderStoep has been a part of Hope for all or part of the last five decades. He was a student in the 1980s, taught on a temporary appointment in the early 1990s, and returned full-time in 1999. He has held several roles at the college: Frost Center director, director of assessment, Hope’s accreditation liaison officer for the Higher Learning Commission, chairperson of the Department of Psychology, and dean for social sciences. He currently serves as a member of the Department of Psychology.
Areas of expertise
Dr. VanderStoep’s teaching areas are developmental psychology, psychology and religion, and cognitive psychology. He also teaches First Year Seminar and Senior Seminar. He has authored three books: two editions of Learning to Learn: The Skill and Will of College Success and Research Methods for Everyday Life. He is also the editor of Science and the Soul: Christian Faith and Psychological Research.

Outside of the college
Dr. VanderStoep serves as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission. In his non-work time, he has been a high school basketball official since 1996.
